Water Main Flushing Overview
Water main flushing is done once or twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. It may temporarily cause water discoloration due to harmless sediment but does not affect water safety.
If Your Water is Discolored:
Run cold water for about 5 minutes. If it remains discolored, wait up to 2 hours and try again. If it still doesn't clear, contact the City of Waconia Utilities. Avoid doing laundry during this time to prevent stains.
Why Flushing is Important:
Flushing removes sediment like rust and minerals that build up in pipes over time. It also ensures hydrants are working properly in case of fire and maintains water quality.
Is It a Waste of Water?
While it may seem wasteful, flushing is essential system maintenance that ensures clean, safe water and reliable hydrant performance.
Hydrant flushing will begin April 21st. Please see the detailed map HERE as flushing will take place in numbered order.
