In 2022, the City of Waconia, with support from CCWMO and BWSR, replaced turf with native prairie at three sites: the Public Works facility, near Cedar Point Park, and by County Road 10 and Interlachen Court. After delays from 2023’s dry weather, growth is improving this summer.
The project reduces maintenance costs, stormwater runoff, and water use, while promoting sustainable landscaping. The native flowers and prairie promote habitats for local pollinators as well.
City staff maintain a mowed buffer around each area to prevent vegetation from encroaching on sidewalks, roads, and trails, and to signal that these landscapes are intentionally managed.
